As a fashion major at Ball State one of the classes you have to take is visual merchandising, this when you learn how to create window displays, it is such a fun class but you also have to understand and realize that for a company store, corporate is the one that gets to decide how, what, where, when a window display should be placed. In the class we were taking on the role of corporate as well as the visual merchandiser in every store. We got to pick what theme we wanted our window display to be, we got to choose what outfit we wanted the mannequin to wear, and lastly we got to choose the decorations that will be placed in the window display.
Before I even worked at LOFT I just figured that the associates who were working the day the mannequins needed to be changed got to just choose what outfit they wanted and what mannequin should wear that outfit. I had no idea that corporate is the one who decides all of that information, I also never knew that there is a visual merchandising book that each store has and that has to follow exactly how every mannequin is placed and the outfit has to be the exact same as the picture. It was very fascinating and interesting to learn that corporate is the one who gets all the say of how a store should be placed. The class that I had to take that was visual merchandising was able to help me understand a little bit more how corporate is able to decide what to dress the mannequins in for the month.
Below is a few window displays I was able to make; it was a group project since there is so much going on for just one window display, these are my three favorite window displays that I had a huge part in creating. The first display with the mirrors, our mindset was going down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland and that it is an optical illusion. The second window display was desert nights with the beautiful sunset, cactus', needing a bandanna to cover your face to prevent sand from getting in your mouth, and then lastly the clouds in the sky to help signify the sunset. Our last window display that we created as a group was our Christmas theme, this window is supposed to represent going to pick out a Christmas tree, looking cute and fashionable during the winter times, we covered the ground with snow to help show that she is walking outside and picking a tree.
